All in? All out? Full speed or full stop? It seems difficult to decide between the two options, as though there is only two options.
My writing life has been one extreme or the other, like trying to drive a car through a crowded city with only two options: slamming one’s foot onto the gas peddle or the brake. Obviously, if you are lucky enough not to crash, you’ll at least land a nasty case of whiplash.
There’s a trick to it. I need to learn it. Balance. Never full in or out in any single “way” or “method”. It’s learning process and craft while moving forward, adjusting in small ways as needed. Turning down a side-street to find another route when the one being followed ends up blocked. I need to turn down one of those roads now.
Following up from my last post, Barriers, the way I’ve managed my dream of being a writer has in and of itself been a barrier. Like above, either slam my foot on the gas, only to slam on the brake when I find I cannot make a turn or something gets in my way.
Nothing I’ve done in the past is wrong, necessarily. Misguided is a better term. Or mismanaged even more accurate. I can learn from where I misstepped. Instead of dumping out and slamming my foot on the other pedal, I can ease up on the gas or ease on the brake… you know, like a normal person drives a car.
Balance is the optimal words. And it might look different day to day, year to year, but it can be achieved. I am certain of this.
