Barriers

We are our own barriers. Even the barriers in the way, we obsess over them. We choose to see them as such, allowing them to block us, to keep us from moving forward. Yes, they prevent us from one thing or another, but it is we who choose to let it stop us in our tracks or to simply find another way.

It’s a slow dawning of my realization in this. There’s always one thing or another blocking my path in whichever endeavor I pursue. Writing it is most apparent. Yet, no matter what I might lack, far more can be done with what I have in front of me than I accept most days.

Writing is a simple art. One need only a writing utensil and paper or a computer to do so. All the other things are flashy add ons. Everything from cover art to editors really count as the “nice to have”, but they are unnecessary. Everything in between the idea and the end product of a book to sell is a plus. And honestly, I have access, in some way or another, to each of these things.

This is where we excel at derailing our own goals. Rather than finding gratitude with what we have, we instead hyper focus on the single detail we don’t have. If it is something near impossible to access, all the better. The more something eludes us, the more we often deem it of greater importance to our pursuit — our very happiness.

Maybe the thing we lack will make something easier, but it will not stop us. It should not stop us. People have done far more with far less. We need only accept this and find the right way forward.
