Being an indie writer affords some benefits. For one, an indie writer can release work at will — whenever and however they please. Why follow the supposed rules of industry? There’s good reason industry has those rules, but they aren’t necessary if one works outside of it.
Another benefit is the ability to ignore the general consensus of an industry. In this case, it involves the type of material a writer releases, how, why, and everything else.
Typically, short stories only “work” as part of a magazine (literary or otherwise), an anthology, or a collection. Granted, print versions of short stories — or really anything shorter than a novella — is a costly ask. But with ebooks? Who cares?
I discussed this a little in an earlier post. Anyway, on the heels of my last few posts, it is time things happen with my writing. Thus, I am announcing the publication dates of four (4) stories I have ready or close enough to ready. Two (2) are short stories, one (1) is a novellette, and one (1) is a piece of middle grade fiction (long long LONG overdue if you ask my son).
Here are the details:
• February 26th — Into Fire’s Den — ebook only — a fantasy short story with dragons. Need I say more?
• April 8th — Soar — paperback and ebook — a middle grade story about a young falcon dealing with tragedy as he prepares to race in The Great Northern Winged Race (another edition will be released at a future date with a lot of illustrations)
• June 8th Now August 5th — Cutting Roots — paperback and ebook — a young man makes the choice of letting his roots grow or leaving the life he knows
• August 5th Now October 7th — Motherhood of Fear — ebook only — a horror short story of a young woman being followed by a dark spirit
• October 7th — To Be Announced — yes, a 5th project! In other words, I haven’t figured out exactly what this one will be yet, but something will be released here, be it novel, novella, or otherwise. This one will be announced when I decide what is going to be published and then when.
The plan for the near future is a one-story-per-every-two-months release schedule. Again, that is the near-term. Time between releases may increase or decrease after October, depending on a number of factors. Outside of what I discussed above, I am not going to write about much else (see THIS blog post if you want a little more as to why).
Anyway, I hope to keep this trend going, but will announce more as it gets closer.
