Words to Ponder #10

“Ever tried. Ever failed. matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.”

Samuel Beckett

This happens to be one of my favorite quotes, and one that I have a lot of trouble actually following.

Failure is such a scary thing, even when it has little in the way of down-sides. We don’t like failing, and often we avoid it. It’s the strange, bewildering individual who can seem to be impervious to the fear of it. They charge forward with little regard to outcome, willing to — no, almost relishing the opportunity to fail.

Failure is a great teacher, though. It teaches us what not to do, leaving a wide range of possibilities still before us. Success on the other hand offers us a narrow path to walk. It binds us.

Although I’ve technically failed to this point, it was for lack of trying more than anything else. Maybe someday soon I will be able to better take this quote, this lesson to heart.
