Words to Ponder #3

“Liberty is meaningless where the right to utter one’s thoughts and opinions has ceased to exist. That, of all rights, is the dread of tyrants. It is the right which they first of all strike down. They know its power. Thrones, dominions, principalities, and powers, founded in injustice and wrong, are sure to tremble, if men are allowed to reason.”

Frederick Douglass

Few humans in history had the wisdom and tenacity that Frederick Douglass had. Given his life experiences, he held some unique and deep insights into the nature of man. These words are but a small taste of that wisdom.

We might think in today’s society that this attack on free speech is being perpetrated only by one party or another, yet it is always under threat. We don’t like to hear what we don’t agree with. What disgusts us. What frightens us.

What tyrant in us all hides, wishing to strike down that thought which we oppose?
