I was shown this via an email newsletter from Nerdist. I am happy that I was shown it.
I am a big Star Wars fan. I love it. There’s a lot to love; there’s also a lot to hate.
On the side of love, the duel in the Phantom Menace (episode 1 and part of the “dreaded” prequels) raised the bar on how a lightsaber duel looks and feels. Darth Maul vs Obi-Wan and Quigon is possibly the best duel in the whole of the series (not necessarily from a plot standpoint – the final Vader vs Luke duel should take that one).
Another great part? Rogue One, almost in its entirety, but more specifically in the appearance of Darth Vader at the end.
Of course, I’ve said before that Star Wars is a poorly written fairy tale in space, but even with the heavy-handed #metoo theme crammed into The Last Jedi (along with whiny Luke), I still choose to love it all. Its escapism; pure escapism.
In the original trilogy (episodes 4, 5, and 6, with 4 and 5 standing as the better written portion of the whole saga), the duels now seem visually weak compared to the newer installations of the movies. The last duel in A New Hope between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader appears more like two old men fighting than what you imagine two Jedi Masters to be capable of. Then the above-mentioned article from Nerdist came through and I was wonderfully surprised.
It appears that a fan redid the famous duel in A New Hope, making it look far closer to what we’d expect from scenes in Phantom Menace and Rogue One. Now, seeing this, it has become the remake that I didn’t know I needed. I want this cut into the original movie… to replace what once was there.
