Five is really too many. I have five projects that need to be edited, revised, beta-read, and then revised again:
Of Earth and Ice
It’s roughly 275,000 words of writing overall that I need to go through. And that doesn’t count the numerous short stories I’ve been working through. Or the fact that I am 2/3rds through the next part of the saga of Agnes Pyle and that would make the total at 6 projects and roughly 400,000 words then to go through.
After I posted “Purpose and Goals,” I examined my work load and the fact that I wanted to get those aforementioned stories out sooner rather than later… and that I really want to make sure that these stories are the way I want the stories to be told (Antlers and Of Earth and Ice need a lot of revising in my eyes and Soar sounded funny in quite a few parts while my son read that one… Gravity 4 and 5 remain to be seen).
I love the writing itself, but I also love seeing my story the way I want it. Part writing; part story crafting. It’s a complicated relationship.
But I found myself in a conundrum: I am trying to write at a volume that has far outstripped my pace of editing/revising. I was putting out more material than I could keep up with. It’s not a terrible problem, but it would suppose that at least for a short time, I would have to stop writing every day…
I don’t want to do that.
But I don’t need to be shooting for 1000 words or more every day. What I should be doing is revising at least 2X the words that I write each day. If I can write 1000 words and revise 2000 words daily, great! But in all honesty, it would require a lot of effort, effort that am not certain I can maintain for more than a day or two at a time.
If I target a few hundred words in fiction each day it should not be overly difficult to also fit in the revisions.
It’s all about shifting priorities. I want my stories to get out there, and I know that they need some work before they will be where I want them to be. Because of that, I need to shift how I am managing my writing. I need to let go of this idea of 1000 or more words a day as a regular thing, instead focusing on writing something every day and revising more than that little something. Then perhaps I will be able to push these projects out so that I can focus on writing surges once again!
